I’m so grateful for the journey that my life and my work have taken me on. Over my career, I’ve lived in some beautiful cities around Australia, as well as in New Zealand and Singapore. As an RMT, I’ve worked in schools, residential aged care, with people with disability or mental health issues, autistic people, and in drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
Outside of music therapy, I’ve worked with grassroots organisations, held national management positions and coordinated international initiatives. I’m passionate about inclusion and I believe that everyone should be accepted regardless of their background or ability. That’s why I spent a number of years working with an international disability advocacy organisation. In this role, I attended meetings at the United Nations and travelled to many countries to talk about the rights of people with intellectual disability. I also spearheaded a Twitter campaign to raise awareness of the derogatory use of the word ‘retard’ on the platform.
Music has always been a part of my life - starting with piano lessons as a youngster, to a high school music scholarship and undertaking my music therapy studies. Besides my music therapy degree, I have a Graduate Diploma in Education.
It is a combination of all of these experiences - my love of music, my passion for inclusion, and my life and career journeys – that have seen me establish Bridge Music Therapy.
So great to meet you. I’m Julia.
